Laura Robson knocked out in first round of Swedish Open

British hopeful Laura Robson has failed to progress into the second round of the Swedish Open after succumbing to a 6-4 7-6[4] defeat at the hands of Anabel Medina Garrigues.

The 18-year-old headed into the tournament on a high after becoming the second British woman since 1992 to reach a WTA semi-final at the Italy Open last week. However, the Brit couldn’t carry her form into Bastad as she struggled against Garrigues.

While Robson did clinch four breaks during the contest, her Spanish opponent had enough to handle the Brit’s groundstrokes and she stormed through to the second round, leaving Robson with eight double faults over the course of the match.

Robson will join up with fellow Brit Heather Watson for the doubles tournament at the London Olympics this summer.
