PH junior chess team bags 5 medals in Iran meet

The national junior chess team bagged two gold, one silver and two bronze medals in the 2013 Asian Youth Chess Championship held in Sari, Iran.

International Master (IM) Jan Emmanuel Garcia bannered the country’s medal haul by winning two golds in the boys’ 18-under class. He ruled the standard chess category and the blitz event of the tournament sanctioned by the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

FIDE Master (FM) Paulo Bersamina chipped in one silver and one bronze in the boys’ 16-under division. Bersamina placed second in the standard chess and wound up third in the blitz event.

Also sharing the limelight was Daryl Unix Samantila who secured a bronze medal in the boys’ 14-under category of the blitz event.

Alekhine Nouri, the world’s youngest FM at seven, placed sixth in the boys’ blitz event and seventh in the standard play.

Other members of the team who also failed to make it to the podium were Istraelito Rilloraza (boys’ 12-under), Deniel Quizon (boys’ 10-under), Woman FM Marie Antoinette San Diego (girls’ 18-under), Ella Grace Moulic (girls’ 16-under), Samantha Glo Revita (girls’ 14-under), Bea Mendoza (girls’ 12-under), Mary Joy Tan (girls’ 10-under) and Jerlyn Mae San Diego (girls’ 8-under).
