Two Filipinos advance in Ultimate 10-Ball tourney

Former world champion Alex Pagulayan and Carlo Biado advanced to the fourth round of the Ultimate 10-Ball Championships being held at the Harrah’s Resort in Tunica, Mississippi.

Pagulayan nipped American Justin Hall in the second round, 10-5, and compatriot Efren “Bata” Reyes in the third round, 10-8, while Biado whipped American Robert Saez in the second round, 10-8, and compatriot Francisco “Django” Bustamante in the next round, 10-7.

In the fourth round, Pa-gulayan will be battling Albin Ouschan of Austria while Biado faces American Shane Van Boening. Pagulayan and Biado got first-round byes.

Reyes and Bustamante were relegated to the losers’ bracket along with Dennis Orcollo, Warren Kiamco and Lee Van Corteza. They are all in a must-win situation to stay alive in the tournament, which offers $23,550 to the champion.

Orcollo blasted Ivica Putnik of Croatia in the first round, 10-3, but failed to sustain his momentum as he succumbed to Niels Fiejen of the Netherlands, 9-10. So as Corteza, who outclassed American Robert Hart in his first game, 10-1, but bowed to American Jeremy Sossei in his next match, 7-10.

Kiamco, for his part, debuted with a 10-1 win over Michael DeLawder of US then swallowed a 2-10 loss to Van Boe-ning in the second round.

In the losers’ side, Reyes meets Donny Mills of US, Bustamante fights John Morra of Canada, Orcollo collides with Ronnie Wiseman of US, Corteza takes on Raj Hundal of India, and Kiamco goes up against Eric Durbin of US.
